High-Tech Trouble


High-tech trash, including old computers, televisions and cellular phones, is causing environmental problems because good disposal options are lacking.

Often, the easiest ways to get rid of electronic waste in El Paso are also the most dangerous to public health and the environment, officials say.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, electronics such as circuit boards and batteries contain toxic materials such as mercury and hexavalent chromium. Televisions contain about 4 pounds of lead, and computer monitors contain both lead and brominated flame-retardant plastics.
